COEX | Seoul Travel Guide, Shopping, Starfield Library & Things to Do
COEX is one of the largest indoor destinations in Seoul and one of the most convenient places to combine shopping, books, exhibitions, entertainment, food, architecture, and modern Korean city life.
Located in Gangnam, COEX is much more than a shopping mall.
The area brings together the COEX Convention & Exhibition Center, Starfield COEX Mall, Starfield Library, COEX Aquarium, restaurants, cafés, fashion stores, entertainment facilities, and exhibition spaces.
Just outside the complex, visitors can also walk toward Bongeunsa Temple, creating an interesting contrast between the modern commercial district and a historic Buddhist temple.
This makes COEX particularly useful for travelers who want an itinerary that works regardless of the weather.
On a rainy or extremely hot day, much of your time can be spent indoors.
On a pleasant day, you can connect the indoor complex with Bongeunsa Temple and the surrounding streets of Samseong.
The official Seoul tourism guide describes COEX as a major venue for large-scale exhibitions, international conferences, cultural events, and other activities, while the surrounding area connects visitors between Samseong Station, Bongeunsa Station, COEX Mall, and nearby commercial spaces.
For first-time visitors, the most recognizable attraction is usually Starfield Library.
But the best way to experience COEX is to think of it as a large urban destination rather than a single attraction.

Why Visit COEX?
COEX is useful because several different Seoul experiences are concentrated in one location.
You can spend part of your day shopping, visit the spectacular Starfield Library, eat Korean or international food, see an exhibition, visit the aquarium, and then walk outside to Bongeunsa Temple.
This makes COEX particularly suitable for:
- Families
- First-time visitors to Gangnam
- Travelers looking for indoor activities
- Shopping enthusiasts
- Architecture and photography fans
- Book lovers
- Visitors attending exhibitions
- Travelers combining modern Seoul with traditional culture
Another advantage is transportation.
COEX is connected to Samseong Station on Subway Line 2 and Bongeunsa Station on Line 9.
The official Seoul tourism guide lists Samseong Station Exit 6 as one of the main access points to COEX, while Bongeunsa Station provides another convenient entrance from the northern side of the complex.
Instead of thinking of COEX as one building, it is better to understand the area as several connected destinations.
What Is COEX?
COEX is a major convention and exhibition complex in southern Seoul.
Large exhibitions, international conferences, business events, cultural programs, and other events are held throughout the year.
Because individual events have different schedules, there is no single opening time that applies to every part of COEX.
The official Seoul tourism guide specifically advises visitors to check the schedule of individual events before visiting.
This is important if you are coming specifically for an exhibition or convention.
However, you do not need to attend an exhibition to enjoy the surrounding COEX area.
The complex also contains shopping, restaurants, cafés, entertainment, and Starfield Library.
Starfield COEX Mall
Starfield COEX Mall is the major shopping and entertainment area within the COEX complex.
The current official Starfield information lists the general COEX Mall operating hours as 10:30–22:00, although individual stores may open at different times.
The mall contains a wide range of businesses, including:
- Fashion
- Beauty
- Lifestyle
- Books
- Restaurants
- Cafés
- Entertainment
- Children’s facilities
- Specialty stores
Because the mall is large, it is easy to underestimate the amount of walking involved.
If you are visiting with children or older family members, it is useful to plan a few breaks rather than trying to cover the entire complex.

Starfield Library
The most recognizable space inside COEX is Starfield Library.
Located in the center of Starfield COEX Mall, the library is designed as an open cultural space where visitors can sit, read, meet, rest, and attend cultural events.
The current official Starfield information lists its operating hours as:
10:30–22:00
Admission is free.
The library occupies approximately 2,800 square meters across multiple levels.
Its most striking feature is the enormous open bookshelves, reaching approximately 13 meters high.
The official Starfield information says the library contains around 70,000 books, including books covering humanities, economics, hobbies, practical subjects, foreign-language books, and other categories. It also has a magazine section featuring hundreds of domestic and international titles.
This combination of books and architecture has made Starfield Library one of the most photographed indoor spaces in Seoul.
Why Is Starfield Library Famous?
The library is visually different from a conventional library.
Instead of enclosed rooms filled with bookshelves, the main space is open and vertically dramatic.
Large bookshelves rise several stories above the central seating area.
The result is particularly impressive when viewed from the surrounding balconies.
For photographers, one of the most useful tips is to avoid taking only the obvious front-facing photograph.
Walk around the library.
Look upward.
Move between different levels.
The perspective changes significantly depending on where you stand.
Starfield Library Is More Than a Photo Spot
It is easy to think of Starfield Library as a famous Instagram location.
However, the space is also designed for reading, resting, meetings, and cultural programming.
The official Starfield Library program includes author talks, lectures, poetry readings, book concerts, and other performances.
This is one reason it is worth checking the current event schedule before visiting.
You may find that a lecture, performance, or cultural program is taking place during your visit.
The schedule changes, so travelers should check the official program rather than relying on an old itinerary.
A Good Time to Visit Starfield Library
Starfield Library is open from 10:30 to 22:00 according to current official information.
For photography, different times can provide different atmospheres.
Morning
A relatively calm time to begin exploring.
Afternoon
The library can become busier as shoppers and tourists arrive.
Evening
The lighting and surrounding mall atmosphere can create a different visual experience.
There is no need to spend hours inside the library.
For many visitors, 30–60 minutes is enough to photograph the architecture, look around, sit down, and continue exploring COEX.
COEX Aquarium
Another major attraction inside the complex is COEX Aquarium.
It can be particularly useful for families traveling with children or for visitors looking for an indoor activity.
Because the aquarium operates separately from the general mall and library areas, check its current admission information and operating schedule before visiting.
If you are planning a full COEX day, the aquarium can be combined with Starfield Library and shopping without requiring a separate trip across Seoul.
This is one of the biggest practical advantages of COEX.
Shopping at COEX
COEX is one of the more convenient places to shop if you want to combine many categories in one location.
The current official store directory includes categories such as:
- Fashion
- Fashion accessories
- Beauty
- Lifestyle
- Home furnishings
- Kids
- Restaurants and cafés
- Entertainment
- Services
This makes COEX different from a neighborhood shopping street.
You can move between different types of stores without worrying about weather or long outdoor walks.
For international visitors, it can also be useful as a place to compare Korean brands and international brands in one location.
Restaurants and Cafés
Because COEX is such a large commercial complex, food options are extensive.
Visitors can find Korean food, international cuisine, cafés, desserts, fast food, and restaurants suitable for families.
Instead of choosing a restaurant solely because it appears on an old travel list, consider checking the current mall directory when you arrive.
Businesses inside a large shopping complex can change over time.
This is especially relevant for a travel website because a restaurant list can become outdated much faster than information about the overall destination.
COEX and Bongeunsa Temple
One of the most interesting things about visiting COEX is that you can combine it with Bongeunsa Temple.
The contrast is striking.
Inside COEX, you are surrounded by:
- Shopping
- Contemporary architecture
- Digital displays
- Fashion
- Restaurants
- Exhibitions
A short walk away, Bongeunsa offers:
- Traditional Korean Buddhist architecture
- Temple grounds
- Historic cultural heritage
- A quieter atmosphere
- Mountain-style landscaping within the city
This combination creates one of the clearest examples in Seoul of traditional Korea existing directly beside a modern commercial district.
For travelers visiting Gangnam for the first time, this is a particularly useful pairing.
COEX and Gangnam Style
Another recognizable landmark near COEX is the Gangnam Style sculpture near the eastern side of the complex.
The sculpture references the global popularity of PSY’s “Gangnam Style” and has become a popular photo stop.
It can be easily combined with a COEX visit because you do not need to make a separate trip across the city.
For visitors interested in contemporary Korean popular culture, this provides another small piece of the Gangnam story.
COEX for Families
COEX is particularly practical for families because many activities are indoors.
A family itinerary might include:
Starfield Library
↓
COEX Aquarium
↓
Lunch
↓
Shopping
↓
Bongeunsa Temple
This allows you to adjust the day depending on weather and the children’s energy levels.
If everyone needs a break, the library provides a convenient place to sit.
If children want a more active attraction, the aquarium provides a different experience.
COEX on a Rainy Day
COEX is one of the better Seoul destinations to keep in mind when the weather is poor.
Rain does not necessarily mean canceling your Gangnam itinerary.
You can spend much of the day indoors:
COEX Mall → Starfield Library → Aquarium → restaurants → shopping
Then, if the weather improves, continue outside to Bongeunsa.
This flexibility makes COEX particularly useful in a Seoul itinerary where weather conditions are uncertain.
A Practical COEX Walking Route
COEX is large enough that having a simple route helps.
Route 1: Samseong Station → COEX Mall → Starfield Library
Start at Samseong Station.
Follow the signs into COEX.
↓
Enter Starfield COEX Mall.
↓
Find Starfield Library.
↓
Explore the library.
↓
Continue through the shopping areas.
Suggested time: 1.5–2.5 hours
This is the easiest introduction to COEX.
Route 2: Starfield Library → COEX Aquarium → Shopping
Start at Starfield Library.
Spend some time photographing and exploring the library.
↓
Visit COEX Aquarium.
↓
Have lunch or coffee.
↓
Explore the shopping areas.
Suggested time: 3–4 hours
This works particularly well for families.
Route 3: COEX → Starfield Library → Bongeunsa Temple
This is probably the most interesting route for travelers who want more than shopping.
Start inside COEX.
↓
Visit Starfield Library.
↓
Explore the mall.
↓
Walk toward Bongeunsa Temple.
↓
Explore the temple grounds.
The contrast between the two destinations makes this route more memorable than spending the entire day inside the mall.
Suggested time: 3–4 hours
Route 4: COEX → Bongeunsa → Gangnam Evening
For a longer Gangnam itinerary:
COEX
↓
Starfield Library
↓
Bongeunsa Temple
↓

↓
Gangnam
This gives you a mixture of modern architecture, shopping, culture, and evening city life.
How Long Should You Spend at COEX?
A short visit focused on Starfield Library can take 1–2 hours.
A more complete visit including shopping and food can easily take 3–5 hours.
Families visiting the aquarium may want to allow even longer.
If you are attending an exhibition or convention, your schedule will depend on the event.
The important thing is not to underestimate the size of the complex.
COEX is not a small shopping center where you can see everything in 30 minutes.
How to Get to COEX
There are two particularly useful subway stations.
Samseong Station
Subway Line 2
Samseong Station is one of the main entrances to COEX.
The official Seoul tourism guide lists Exit 6 as a primary access point, approximately 273 meters from the COEX address.
Bongeunsa Station
Subway Line 9
Bongeunsa Station is particularly convenient for the northern side of the complex and Starfield Library.
The official Seoul tourism guide lists Exit 7 at approximately 328 meters from Starfield Library.
Which Station Should You Use?
If your itinerary starts with the main COEX complex, Samseong Station is convenient.
If you want to combine Starfield Library and Bongeunsa Temple, Bongeunsa Station can be particularly useful.
COEX for International Travelers
COEX can be a useful destination for travelers who are still getting used to Seoul.
The large indoor environment means there are many signs and facilities designed for visitors.
The complex also provides access to:
- Restaurants
- Shopping
- Restrooms
- Information services
- Elevators
- Accessible pathways
- Baby-related facilities
The official Seoul tourism listing notes accessibility facilities and baby carriage rentals at COEX.
This makes COEX a practical stop for travelers who prefer a highly organized environment.
What to Do at COEX When You Have Only Two Hours
If you are short on time, don’t attempt to explore everything.
Use this simple route:
Samseong Station
↓
Starfield Library
↓
Quick look around COEX Mall
↓
Coffee or snack
↓
Exit toward Bongeunsa
If you have another 30–60 minutes, visit Bongeunsa Temple.
This gives you a compact introduction to both modern and traditional Seoul.
What to Do at COEX on a Full Day
With a full day, you can slow down considerably.
Morning
Arrive at COEX.
Explore the mall and Starfield Library.
Lunch
Choose a restaurant inside COEX.
Afternoon
Visit COEX Aquarium or an exhibition.
Late Afternoon
Walk toward Bongeunsa Temple.
Evening
Return toward the Samseong area for dinner.
This avoids having to cross Seoul multiple times.
COEX Travel Tips
Check exhibition schedules
COEX hosts many temporary exhibitions and conventions.
The schedule changes constantly.
If a particular exhibition is your reason for visiting, verify the event date before traveling.
Check individual store hours
The mall’s general operating hours are currently 10:30–22:00, but individual stores can have different opening times.
Don’t confuse COEX and COEX Mall
COEX is the larger convention and exhibition complex.
Starfield COEX Mall is the shopping and entertainment area inside the complex.
They are connected, but they serve different purposes.
Give yourself extra walking time
The complex is large and underground connections can make distances feel longer than expected.
Combine with Bongeunsa
This is one of the easiest ways to add cultural depth to a COEX visit.
Use Seoul Travel Tips Tools While Exploring COEX
COEX is a good destination for using the practical tools on Seoul Travel Tips.
Walking Helper
Use Walking Helper when moving between:
- Samseong Station
- Starfield Library
- COEX Aquarium
- COEX Mall
- Bongeunsa Temple
The complex is large, and knowing the walking distance between destinations can help you plan your time.
Seoul Subway Route Finder
Use the Seoul Subway Route Finder when traveling to COEX from other parts of Seoul.
The two key stations to remember are:
Samseong Station — Line 2
Bongeunsa Station — Line 9
Global ATM Finder
Use Global ATM Finder if you need to find an ATM while shopping or eating at COEX.
This can be more convenient than leaving the complex to search for one.
Seoul Travel OCR
Use Seoul Travel OCR when you encounter Korean product information, restaurant names, exhibition information, or signs that you cannot read.
This can be especially useful in a large shopping complex with many Korean-language displays.
COEX and Modern Seoul
COEX represents a very different side of Seoul from places such as Gyeongbokgung Palace or Bukchon Hanok Village.
Those destinations help visitors understand Seoul’s historical identity.
COEX shows another side:
international business, shopping, design, entertainment, exhibitions, technology, and contemporary urban life.
Yet the presence of Bongeunsa Temple only a short walk away creates an unusual connection between these two worlds.
That contrast is one of the most interesting things about visiting this part of Gangnam.
You can photograph futuristic architecture in the morning, browse thousands of books in the afternoon, and walk through a traditional temple courtyard later the same day.
Final Thoughts
COEX is much more than a shopping destination.
It is a large-scale urban complex where shopping, culture, books, exhibitions, entertainment, food, architecture, and traditional heritage come together.
For many visitors, Starfield Library will be the highlight.
Its towering bookshelves and open architecture make it one of the most distinctive indoor spaces in Seoul, and its free admission makes it easy to include in almost any Gangnam itinerary.별마당도서관 소개 | 스타필드 코엑스몰
But don’t stop at the library.
Explore the mall.
Check the current exhibition schedule.
Consider visiting the aquarium.
Then walk outside toward Bongeunsa Temple.
The best COEX itinerary is therefore not simply:
“Go to the library and take a photo.”
Instead, think of the area as a sequence:
Modern Seoul → Shopping → Books & Culture → Entertainment → Traditional Seoul
That combination makes COEX one of the most practical places to experience a different side of Seoul, especially when you want an itinerary that works in both good and bad weather.

A Local’s Note
COEX is a place I highly recommend on rainy days or when the weather is bad. It’s the perfect spot for shopping and trying great food. It’s huge, spreading across both above-ground and underground levels, and you can walk right in from the subway station, so you can do everything indoors.
The one place I especially recommend you see is Starfield Library. It’s COEX’s landmark and a great spot for taking photos. Besides that, make sure to visit COEX Aquarium. You can experience so much here without ever going outside, so I highly recommend it.
Personally, this is one of my favorite places. It’s also easy to get to on Line 2, which connects it with Hongik University Station and City Hall Station in Jongno, so it’s nice to visit them together as one sightseeing course.
