A Late-Night Visit to Namdaemun Market in Seoul
Today, I would like to share my experience visiting Namdaemun Market at night.

I visited Namdaemun Market one evening because I wanted to have dinner and take a walk around one of Seoul’s most famous traditional markets. Visiting the market at night was a little different from seeing it during the daytime. The streets were still lively, with restaurants, food stalls, and shops creating a unique atmosphere in the heart of Seoul.
Namdaemun Market is located in Namdaemun-ro 4-ga, Jung-gu, Seoul, near Sungnyemun Gate. It is one of the largest and most famous traditional markets in Korea and has long been an important shopping and trading area in central Seoul.
The market is known for its lively atmosphere and attracts a large number of visitors every day. It is also conveniently located near several popular tourist destinations, including Myeongdong, N Seoul Tower, and Seoul Station, making it easy to include Namdaemun Market in a Seoul sightseeing itinerary.
Namdaemun Market is a wholesale and retail market where a wide variety of products are sold at relatively affordable prices. As I walked through the market, I found shops selling clothing, fashion accessories, bags, jewelry, kitchenware, agricultural and seafood products, and many other everyday items.

However, one of the biggest attractions of Namdaemun Market is its food.
The market is especially well known for its traditional Korean food and street food. Some of the most famous foods and areas include Galchi Jorim Alley, Kalguksu Alley, hotteok, and gomtang. The narrow streets filled with food stalls and small restaurants make the market a fun place to explore, especially if you enjoy trying local food.
Walking through the market in the evening was an enjoyable experience. Rather than simply visiting a famous tourist attraction, I felt that Namdaemun Market offered a chance to see a more everyday side of Seoul. The combination of traditional shops, local restaurants, street food, and people moving through the narrow market streets gave the area a distinctive character.
If you are planning to visit Namdaemun Market, the easiest way to get there is by subway. Take Line 4 to Hoehyeon Station and use Exit 5, 6, or 7. The market is just a short walk from the station.

Namdaemun Market is also a good place to visit together with nearby attractions. You can start at Seoul Station, walk toward Namdaemun Market and Sungnyemun Gate, continue to Myeongdong, and then head toward other central Seoul attractions.
For me, visiting Namdaemun Market late in the evening was a pleasant way to experience Seoul beyond its major tourist attractions. If you want to enjoy Korean food, explore a traditional market, and experience the lively atmosphere of downtown Seoul, Namdaemun Market is certainly worth adding to your itinerary.
If you are visiting Seoul, why not stop by Namdaemun Market for dinner and experience Seoul after dark?
📍 Location
Location of Namdaemun Market
Namdaemun Market is located in Jung-gu, central Seoul, just south of the historic city center. It is one of Seoul’s most famous traditional markets and is surrounded by major attractions, shopping areas, historic landmarks, and transportation hubs.
The market stretches through a large network of streets and small shopping alleys near Sungnyemun Gate (Namdaemun). With thousands of stores and vendors, visitors can find clothing, accessories, food, souvenirs, household items, traditional products, and many other goods.
Address:
21 Namdaemunsijang 4-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul, South Korea
Because the market covers a relatively large area, it is worth exploring beyond the main entrance streets. Small alleys often offer different shopping and food experiences from the larger commercial streets. The Seoul Metropolitan Government describes Namdaemun Market as Korea’s largest traditional market, with more than 10,000 stores.
🚇 How to Get to Namdaemun Market
By Subway
The easiest way to reach Namdaemun Market is by Seoul Subway Line 4.
Hoehyeon Station (Line 4)
Hoehyeon Station is the closest subway station to Namdaemun Market.
- Exit 7: approximately 17 meters from the market
- Exit 5: convenient for reaching the Namdaemun Market Tourist Information Center
For first-time visitors, Hoehyeon Station is the most convenient starting point because the market begins almost immediately after leaving the station.
The official Seoul tourism guide identifies Hoehyeon Station on Line 4 as the nearest subway station to Namdaemun Market.
🚌 By Bus
Several city buses stop around the Namdaemun and Hoehyeon areas.
Bus transportation can be convenient if you are coming from Myeongdong, Seoul Station, City Hall, or other central Seoul neighborhoods.
Because Namdaemun Market has several entrances and streets, it is useful to check your exact destination before choosing a bus stop.
🚕 By Taxi
Taxis are readily available around Namdaemun Market.
However, the market’s narrow streets can become crowded, particularly during busy shopping periods. If you are traveling by taxi, getting dropped off near a main road and continuing on foot may be more convenient than entering the smaller market streets by car.
🛍️ What to Expect at Namdaemun Market
Namdaemun Market feels very different from Seoul’s modern shopping districts.
Instead of large department stores and international retail brands, the market is made up of small shops, traditional vendors, food stalls, narrow alleys, and specialty stores.
You can find a wide variety of products, including:
- Clothing and accessories
- Korean souvenirs
- Traditional Korean products
- Food and snacks
- Kitchen and household goods
- Children’s clothing
- Eyewear
- Imported products
- Specialty goods
The market is also well known for its food alleys, where visitors can experience traditional Korean dishes and casual market food.
Because the market has a large wholesale component, prices and products can vary from shop to shop. Taking your time to compare products can be part of the experience.
