Last updated: October 2026 Β· Written by the Seoul Travel Tips team, based in Seoul

The good news: you don’t need the “best” neighborhood, you need the one closest to what you actually plan to do. This guide compares eight popular areas β€” what each is like, which stations serve it, how easy it is to reach from the airport, and who it suits.

Myeongdong β€” Best All-Round Base for First-Timers

Myeongdong puts you in the middle of everything: Korean cosmetics shops, street food stalls every evening, Namdaemun Market, and the cable car up to N Seoul Tower. Gyeongbokgung Palace is about 20 minutes by subway, and several airport buses stop right outside the big hotels.

Good for: first trips, short stays, shopping, families who want everything close by. Think twice if: you want quiet evenings β€” the main streets are packed until late.

Jongno and Insadong β€” Best for Palaces and Traditional Seoul

This is the historic heart of the city. From here you can walk to Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Bukchon Hanok Village, Insadong’s tea houses and craft shops, and Ikseon-dong‘s hanok cafes. Jongno 3-ga is served by three subway lines, making it easy to reach the rest of the city. Some guesthouses here are in restored hanok houses.

Good for: culture and history lovers, walkers, photographers. Think twice if: nightlife is a priority β€” the area gets quiet after 10 p.m.

Hongdae β€” Best for Nightlife and Young Travelers

Around Hongik University you’ll find street performers, live music clubs, cafes, vintage shops and late-night food. The big practical advantage: Hongik Univ. Station is on the AREX line, so you can ride the All-Stop train straight from Incheon Airport without changing.

Good for: solo and younger travelers, nightlife, budget hotels and guesthouses. Think twice if: you are a light sleeper β€” choose a hotel a few blocks from the main streets.

Dongdaemun β€” Best for Late-Night Shopping and Value

Fashion malls here stay open late into the night, and the futuristic Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) is lit up after dark. Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station connects three subway lines, and hotel prices are often lower than in Myeongdong for a similar central location. Gwangjang Market is a short ride away.

Good for: shoppers, night owls, value seekers. Think twice if: you want a pretty, traditional neighborhood outside your door.

Gangnam β€” Best for Modern Seoul

Gangnam is wide avenues, office towers, department stores, COEX Mall and Starfield Library, and Bongeunsa Temple. Hotels range from business chains to luxury towers.

Good for: business trips, repeat visitors, travelers focused on southern Seoul. Think twice if: your plans center on palaces and Bukchon β€” expect 30–40 minutes each way.

Itaewon β€” Best for International Food and Bars

Seoul’s most international neighborhood has food from all over the world, rooftop bars and a relaxed, diverse crowd. It sits between Namsan and the Han River.

Good for: longer stays, foodies, nightlife. Think twice if: you have heavy luggage β€” many streets are steep, so check the walk from the station before booking.

Seongsu β€” Best for Cafes and Contemporary Seoul

Old factories in Seongsu have become cafes, pop-up stores and design shops, and Seoul Forest is next door. It’s one of the city’s most exciting areas to explore, though there are fewer hotels than in the center.

Good for: repeat visitors, cafe hoppers, fashion and design fans. Think twice if: this is your first trip and you want to see the palaces.

Seoul Station β€” Best for Transport Connections

The AREX Express runs nonstop from here to Incheon Airport in about 43 minutes, and KTX high-speed trains leave for Busan and other cities. It is a practical base for an early flight or train-based day trips, and Myeongdong is just two subway stops away.

Before You Book: Five Checks

  1. Walk time to the station. Under 5 minutes is ideal. A “Myeongdong” hotel can be 15 minutes from Myeongdong Station.
  2. Which lines serve that station. A station on two or three lines saves transfers every day.
  3. Hills and stairs. Open street view for the final walk, especially in Itaewon, Namsan and Bukchon.
  4. Airport route. Is there an airport bus stop or AREX station nearby? Think about your departure day too.
  5. Luggage storage. If you arrive early or leave late, check that the hotel will hold your bags. Otherwise, use a station locker. β†’ T-luggage & T-locker guide

  • Myeongdong β†’ Namsan β†’ Namdaemun β†’ DDP: stay in Myeongdong or Dongdaemun.
  • Hongdae β†’ Yeonnam-dong β†’ Mangwon β†’ Han River: stay in Hongdae.
  • COEX β†’ Gangnam β†’ Seongsu β†’ Jamsil: stay in Gangnam or Seongsu.

A Local’s Note

If you don’t have many days for your trip, the best way to choose where to stay is to first decide which areas you’ll spend most of your time exploring, then find a place nearby.

That said, your hotel doesn’t have to be right next to the sights. With the subway, you can get anywhere in Seoul quickly, so even if you stay a bit farther away, getting to the attractions by public transportation is easy. So it’s a good idea to choose your accommodation based on your travel dates, how many days you’re staying, how you’ll book, and the price.

By the way, I think it would also be nice to try a Templestay for about a day. I recommend it because it’s an experience you can only have in Korea.
